*Dear Colleagues;*
This note is to inform you of an upcoming change regarding veterinary treatments at competitions sanctioned by the FEI.
Starting January 1 2012, all veterinarians treating horses during FEI competitions will have to be certified or approved as « FEI treating Veterinarians ». The certification process will be online and consist of an exam (open book) on the FEI veterinary rules. A transition period will be allowed until June 2012 at which time the rule will be enforced.
This certification will be valid for 5 years. Veterinarians attending competitions as « emergency » field of play veterinarians (not entering the stable areas) will not be required to be certified.
In an effort to facilitate the process and until the final details about the examination procedure are available, Equine Canada would like to invite any veterinarians intending to take the certification to send an email to Kari Macgregor (karimacgregor@equinecanada.ca
<mailto:karimacgregor@equinecanada.ca>) including correspondence information. Details about the examination process will then be communicated as soon as available.
Do not hesitate to communicate with me or Kari Macgregor for any further information ;
Best regards ;
Yves Rossier, DVM
National Head FEI Veterinarian, Canada

November 08 2011
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is reminding members and competitors of the rule changes surrounding drugs and medications in competition horses.
The new competition year begins December 2011. With all of these important rule changes taking effect, the USEF encourages every exhibitor, trainer, coach, and owner to take the time, prior to competing, to carefully review the "Guidelines for How Long Drugs Remain Detectable" which can be accessed online or by calling 800/633-2472 to request a copy of the 2012 USEF Drugs & Medications Guidelines.

A Closer Look at Endurance Ride Pull Codes
Veterinarian Melissa Ribley kindly provided an article in Endurance News a couple of years ago elucidating pull codes for horses and riders on endurance rides:
M – Metabolic
L – Lameness
OT – Overtime
SF – Surface Factors
Then there’s the RO – Rider Option, when there is nothing wrong with the horse and it has been cleared by a vet, but the rider wishes to pull; RO-L, when the horse has been cleared by the vet, but the rider feels there may be some lameness issue, and RO-M, when the horse has been cleared by the vet but the rider feels there may be some metabolic issue.

2011 World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) Conference
November 4, 2011
FEI President HRH Princess Haya gave the opening address at the 2011 World
Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) Conference in India on Wednesday, noting the 250th anniversary of the first veterinary school in Lyons, France, and the birth of the modern veterinary profession.
She addressed 600 delegates, including key members of the world's equine industry, breeders and leading equine veterinarians, at the conference in the historic city of Hyderabad.
"The events organised around the world to mark World Veterinary Year have demonstrated the crucial role veterinarians play in improving animal health, pushing the boundaries of biomedical research and protecting the environment," Princess Haya said.
"The challenge is to better serve the wider equestrian community by leading and taking courageous and sometimes difficult decisions while ensuring that our horses, our industry, our sport, our food supplies and the future scientific breakthroughs needed the world over are protected in all ways..."

Dear Members of National Federations,
As you may already know, we are planning to introduce a new FEI star rating system for Endurance Treating Veterinarians. This new system will be enforced from January 2012 and the year 2011 will serve as a transition period.
A star-rating list of Endurance Treating Veterinarians will be established according to a “fast track” procedure. You, as National Federation, will be asked to give us a list of your Endurance Treating Veterinarians (on the attached form), each with a star rating, based on criteria (see annex).
These criteria have been approved by the Endurance Technical Committee, and will be tabled at the 2011 General Assembly.
We would like to ask you to voluntarily use the system during the transition period (2011), which will allow time for you to register your Endurance Treating Veterinarians with us at the Non-Olympic Sports Department.
The FEI and the FEI Endurance Technical Committee’s decision to introduce the new system follows the successful implementation of star rating systems for FEI Endurance Judges, FEI Technical Delegates and FEI Endurance Veterinarians since January 2008.
Should you have any queries, please feel free to contact us.
Kind regards,
Bettina de Rham
Manager Non Olympic Sports Dept.
