ALLTECH FEI WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES 2010 - ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Lexington, 26 September
MIGHTY MARIA WINS ENDURANCE GOLD, UAE SCOOP TEAM TITLE by Louise Parkes
Spain's Maria Mercedes Alvarez Ponton and her super-horse, Nobby, wrote their names into the history books of the sport of Endurance today when adding the individual gold medal at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Kentucky to their 2008 World Championship and 2009 European Championship titles. The hat-trick has never been done before, and Nobby's extraordinary recovery-rate proved key to their success once again. But Ponton herself is something of a super-woman. Only seven weeks ago she gave birth to her daughter, Maria, yet she had the stamina, skill, physical fitness and concentration to win the coveted title against the sharpest competition today.

Most Frequently Asked Questions related to the WEG:
What is the FEI, who leads it and what do they do? The Fédération Equestre Internationale (International Equestrian Federation, but it's in French because that's the traditional language of the Olympic Games), is the worldwide authority for all international events in dressage, para-equestrian dressage, jumping, eventing, driving, para-equestrian
driving, endurance, vaulting and reining. Headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, the FEI works with the national federations of each member country to regulate and govern equestrian disciplines. FEI's current president is Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, who is sometimes seen at the Keeneland sales with her husband, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Where have previous Games been held, and where will they be in the future?
The first World Games were in 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden. Following that, the Games were held every four years in the following locations:
1994: The Hague, Netherlands
1998: Rome, Italy
2002: Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
2006: Aachen, Germany
2010: Lexington (the first time in the United States)
In 2014, the Games will be in Normandy, France.
How much public money will be spent on the Games? About $107 million will have been spent directly on projects associated with the Games, such as new facilities at the Kentucky Horse Park and road projects. Another $151 million has been spent on projects that may have already been planned, but were put on a faster timetable because of the Games.

There has already been heartbreak in the barn for Pedro Pablo from Chile. His endurance horse got his foot caught in its haynet the very first night
it was stabled here at the park and fell down and was injured. Luckily the horse will recover, but what terrible luck. All the other riders from the other disciplines have been very sympathetic to his situation as everyone
who competes understands that kind of heartbreak with the horses.
Unfortunately Chile only sent three endurance horses so now they no longer have a team. Pedro has been a real trooper about it and says he needs a halter with 'shit happens' written on the side of it.

The temporary quarantine facility at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport is ready to receive the first of its nearly 500 equine guests today in the lead-up to the World Equestrian Games in Lexington.
The games start on September 25 and run through to October 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park.
The airport has been classed as a temporary port of entry for the horses heading to compete at the games.
Last Friday the first group of eight horses representing Chile and Guatemala in Endurance arrived at the Kentucky Horse Park. The horses had been quarantined in Miami since their flight to the United States and travelled via trailer to Kentucky.
The first horses from Europe and the Middle East are scheduled to arrive today via non-stop flights from Belgium. About 50 horses and their attendants will travel on each of these special flights into the airport.
The importation of horses into the US is supervised by the US Department of Agriculture in order to monitor the health of the animals. Horses that are imported from Europe and the Middle East via the Cincinnati/Northern
Kentucky Airport must undergo at least a 42-hour quarantine upon arrival to the US. The quarantine facility will be managed by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the veterinarians from the World Games...

Sir Smith (Smitty) has been withdrawn from consideration for the US Endurance Team for the World Endurance Championship. Sir Smith injured himself slightly either in his stall or turnout a week ago. The hind end lameness did not appear to be serious and appeared to get better, but it
showed up again today. Rider Jeremy Reynolds formally withdrew him today.
Wife Heather Reynolds said, "It would not be fair to Smitty, the team or himself to do this [warm Sir Smith up well so he'd trot out sound] for our final trot out on Friday morning. It was very improbable that Smitty would be able to go 100 miles in 10 days looking the way he does."
The Reynolds have another horse among the 8 riders and 10 horses vying for a slot on the US Team - Heather and Ssamiam. Cici Butler Stasiuk and DJB Cytron Kon JMF also withdrew last week when Cytron came up with a lameness.
Tomorrow the 5 horse and rider teams for the WEC will be chosen at Shaker
Village tomorrow.

TV Coverage of the WEG:
With the World Equestrian Games just 9 days away, I’m getting quite antsy to know what broadcasts will be available on television and online for the week I won’t get to be there. It seems like there’s going to be more coverage than is currently scheduled officially and publicly, but it hasn’t been nailed down just yet.
Here’s what we know so far about when and where you can watch the World Equestrian Games on television…
WEG Television Coverage on NBC
NBC has the exclusive for airing WEG, at least here in the States. They’ve been making a big deal about how it’s more television coverage than WEG has ever gotten in years past! Yes, folks, we are getting a total of 6.5 hours of television coverage on NBC. Here’s the official schedule:
Sunday, September 26 at 12pm EST
Sunday, October 2 at 1pm EST (after the Ryder cup)
Sunday, October 10 at 4pm
On the first Sunday, the reining team competition will be aired live with commentator Aaron Ralston, a reiner who happened to be on the gold-medal winning team and the individual bronze medalist at the 2006 WEG. America’s Horse Daily has the full scoop on the reining coverage. Reining will be included in all three broadcasts. I would expect we’ll also see some eventing and show jumping highlights, as they are the more popular spectator sports. Especially since the popularity of NBC’s Rolex 3Day coverage is a big part of the reason they agreed to devote so much air time to WEG.
And note, too, that while NBC is airing the Games, they are not producing or covering it themselves. The WEG Foundation had to buy the air time and do the producing themselves. However, that does allow them to get the advertising dollars for the commercials aired during the broadcast.
WEG On Universal Sports
NBC is also supposedly going to be airing about 30 hours of coverage on their cable channel Universal Sports, but I can’t find any kind of schedule for that yet. If you know of one, please share. Otherwise, I’ll add it in as soon as it becomes available.
World Equestrian Games Online Streaming
I can’t find any specific schedules for online streaming yet, but I know you’ll be able to get it across the globe from www.FEITV.org I’ve also seen notes in articles from reputable sources that NBC will be providing online and mobile streaming, but I have yet to dig up any details. Please do pass them along if you find them!

Lexington, KY - Ten days to go before the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games
(September 25-October 10) and the American horses and riders are putting the finishing touches on their preparation. Where are they and what are they up
to?
The ENDURANCE horses are all in Harrodsburg, KY where they are traversing and training through historic Shaker Village less than an hour from the Kentucky Horse Park. All 12 horses (10 riders - as Meg Sleeper and Ellen Rapp each have two) have been training well and staying fit under the
guidance of Chef d'Equipe Becky Hart. They will have their final veterinary evaluation on the September 17, after which the final teal will be named.
There are an unprecedented amount of family ties in the endurance group this year: Heather and Jeremy Reynolds are married (both are named to the short
list) and Jeremy's identical twin brother, Tim grooms for him. Ellen Rapp's groom is also her identical twin sister Eryn. The chances of being an identical twin are 0.4% or 1 in 250, so the chance of two different identical twins being on this list of 10 is incredible.

*Students, members and staff take on a variety of roles to promote equine health care*
When elite equestrians compete for world titles this month, the American Association of Equine Practitioners will be working behind the scenes and before the cameras to ensure the health of equine athletes.
The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™, held Sept. 25-Oct. 10 in Lexington, Ky., is anticipated as the largest sporting event to take place in the United States this year. As the nation’s leading organization dedicated to equine health care, the AAEP and its members will participate in many ways during the three weeks of the Games. The AAEP will actively promote the equine veterinary profession to an international audience, involve its student membership in learning opportunities and provide crucial
equine medical information to the numerous media outlets covering the Games.

Security will be tight for WEG
By John Cheves
jcheves@herald-leader.com
For the 16 days of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, the Kentucky Horse Park should be the safest place in the state outside of Fort Knox.
Lexington and Kentucky State police will work with Kentucky National Guard troops and 1,000 paid and volunteer security guards to patrol the Horse Park, guide traffic, screen visitors and protect the yet-to-be-named Very Important Persons in the audience, some of whom are bringing their own security details.
"People will notice us. We want them to notice us and be comfortable, knowing that we've put real effort into the operation here," said Kevin Tyo, president of Event Security Consulting and Operations Inc., a Georgetown firm that won the primary security contract for WEG.
Security will be tight because the Games, like any large gathering of international visitors and VIPs, is a possible target for terrorism — although officials say they're unaware of any specific threats — and more routine kinds of crime, such as theft.
WEG's high profile is keeping law enforcement on its toes. As many as 60,000 visitors are expected to crowd the park on the busiest days, such as when the popular cross-country competition is held. The Games will be televised to scores of nations by hundreds of journalists from around the globe.
WEG officials haven't confirmed the guest list because of security concerns and because many of those invited have not responded, but it's likely to include government leaders and entertainment celebrities.
Past and present leaders of the International Equestrian Federation, the ruling body of WEG, include Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Jordan, its current president; Sheikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa of Bahrain; Prince Philip, husband of Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth; and the Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón, sister of Spain's King Juan Carlos. Some are likely to attend.
A large delegation of French officials will attend to accept the hand-over for the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy.
Some entertainers in town to perform during WEG — such as actor John Lithgow and Irish tenor Ronan Tynan — will attend the Games.
Visitor checkpoints
Arriving at the park, all visitors must walk through the main checkpoint. Guards will search bags and remove prohibited items, including food, drinks, umbrellas and weapons. Tickets will be scanned for authenticity.
Accredited journalists covering the Games will be searched at their own checkpoint. The journalists, who will have more behind-the-scenes access than the general public, were required to submit their names and personal information for background checks.
The National Guard will patrol the perimeter to keep anyone from sneaking into the park from neighboring horse farms, and security guards will be stationed at the entrance to at least one of the farms with the owner's permission, Tyo said.
Parts of the Horse Park will be off-limits to all but essential personnel, Tyo said. The barns and stables, where the competing horses are to be kept, will have the highest security to prevent anyone from injuring horses or otherwise interfering with the competition.
The Grooms Village, where grooms and other participants will live in trailers, will be off limits to protect the residents' privacy.
More than 100 video surveillance cameras are being installed throughout the park, in addition to the existing security system. The cameras will let guards monitor the crowds from the Security Command Center at the park, which will be staffed throughout the day, Tyo said. The center also will watch the weather in case storms threaten to develop.
100-mile challenge
Perhaps the greatest logistical challenge is the 100-mile endurance run involving up to 80 riders, Tyo said. It will include members of the family of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai.
Tyo said his guards are working with Lexington police, WEG officials and the sheikh's personal detail to secure the six loops comprising the endurance route, which include 12 road crossings in the area and cover land on several private farms.
Finally, Tyo said, he is prepared to establish a secured "free speech area" near the park if animal rights groups or other protesters arrive. At present, no protesters are expressing an interest in WEG, he said.
Tyo would not say how much his company will be paid out of WEG's $76 million operating budget.
The Kentucky State Police has budgeted $1.3 million to cover its WEG costs, Lt. David Jude said. None of that is expected to be reimbursed.
Lexington police have budgeted no extra money for WEG because they don't expect the Games or the city's accompanying Spotlight Lexington Festival to require overtime, said police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts. Existing shifts should be adequate, Roberts said.
"We should be able to do WEG and Spotlight Lexington and still be able to handle the calls we get from the community," Roberts said.

Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States will continue their fierce rivalry to be the tops in equestrian sport when they compete in the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games starting Sept. 25.
Those four countries are the only ones that will have teams in all eight disciplines during the Games — reining, vaulting, dressage, eventing, show jumping, endurance, para dressage and driving. But 54 other countries will compete in one or more events through Oct. 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Nineteen countries will compete in five or more disciplines, organizers said.

Candelita and Jaime Mansilla earned their place in the Guatemalan Team for the WEG 2010, on June 19th at the FEI 3* Event in El Caman Chimaltenango, with Easyboot Bares as back up.
We had three US FEI Officials attending the event, Dr. Mike Tomlinson, Teresa Cross and Sue Phillips helping us as Foreign Officials. And our own FEI 4* Judge Scarlet de Rodas was on location, who has participated in several FEI rides in the US, including the Git R Done in California last January.
Candelita has been shod her entire career she is now nine years old and has done endurance for four years. But we at Haras EL Pino Endurance have started experimenting with natural hoof care for about eight months with the broodmare band and non-competition horses. We were so impressed with the results that were now at the stage of trying it on our competition horses...

USA SELECTION TRIALS FOR WEG….
Hello from Danville Illinois.,
Tomorrow am they will run the trials. This is not a race. It is a selection trial.
There are 28-29 horses here who have been grouped together in bunches of 5 or 6 . Each group will start at ten to 20 minute intervals. This gives the front group about one hour of cooler weather. The good news is that we may get some cooler weather in with highs near 90 instead on upper 90's. The bad news is that it may storm.
Each group is supposed to go 12 /2 mph for the 80 miles. This includes pulse down time so they need to really go over 13mph. They are supposed to stick together, so if somebody has to adjust tack or give e-lytes the rest of the group is supposed to wait on them. The selection committee will be going around on ATV's watching how the horses and riders go.
Crewing will be interesting to watch. As nearly as I can tell from the instructions given at the meeting,... There will be a gauntlet of buckets and the head groom will lead the horse through and everybody he/she points to will throw water on the horse until the groom says stop. Then only the one groom and rider will be allowed to take care of the horse during the holds. Now this may seems confusing to some of you, but it is even more so me here. They chose/ drafted volunteers to be the road crew. These folks will get to stay out of camp all day and throw water on horses passing by. They will have no shade, and the port potty may not be there. You have never seen so many people try to avoid eye contact as when they were picking those lucky people.
So we have these 28 or so hardy souls who have planned their lives around this. They ride tomorrow, and sometime Wednesday afternoon, the selection committee will tell 10 or 12 rider/horse teams they have qualified to advance to the next round. These chosen ones will have to pack up and go to Shaker Heights Kentucky and hang out there for 3 weeks.
Then the week before WEG, they will choose 4 and an alternate from those 10-12 to represent us. Can you imagine how it would feel to go through all this, and be #6 on the list when it is all over?
So there will be no report of who "wins" tomorrow. They will do the announcement of the 10 winners later

Concern over the selection and demonstration process for the US team has prompted former multiple World Endurance Champion Valerie Kanavy to withdraw her 3 horses - King Ali Gold, Gold Raven, and Spectacular Gold, from the selection trials for the World Endurance Championship to be held September 26, 2010 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Horsetalk.co.nz - WEG Endurance - GPS Tracking
August 5, 2010
Horses in the endurance competition at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky next month will each be tracked on the 160km course by GPS.
The GPS service should mean support crew and spectators will know exactly where a horse and rider is on the course, how the team is doing, and average speeds during the ride.
The tracking service is being provided by AT&T, which is leasing Foundation Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Cards for the endurance event. This is the first time in the history of the Games where endurance athletes will be tracked using GPS throughout the 160km competition.
"With GPS tracking devices for the endurance competition, we are changing the way this sport is followed," said Emmett Ross, Discipline Manager for the Endurance World Championship...

The Kentucky state veterinarian's office has the yeoman's responsibility to regulate and manage the importation of an estimated 800 horses representing 62 countries that are scheduled to participate in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Sept. 25-Oct. 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington.
"The World Equestrian Games are far greater in size and scope than anything the state veterinarian's office has managed before," Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. "However, the staff of the state veterinarian's office has vast experience in equine health and works several large-scale and high-profile events every year. These equine athletes couldn't be in better hands."

The Namibian WEG Team - The Long Road from Africa
Three Namibian girls gain qualifications to ride for the Namibian Endurance team on US horses at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. “It’s an awesome feeling,” said 19 year old, Anna Wucher. “We're happy to finally get to say we're going to the WEG and not if, when, and maybe! We are all very excited and hope we do well there, too!”

Pamela Burton, Burton Graphics & Photojournalism
The three girls have been working and training at Darolyn Butler’s Cypress Trails Ranch in South Texas near Houston. Kordula Voigts, 24, was the first to arrive. “Dulie is an excellent rider, but had no previous endurance experience before she started riding with me in April of 2008,” said Butler. “She's a brilliant horsewoman and perhaps the most compassionate, yet effective trainer I've ever known. She's turned three different, almost man-eater horses completely around. Duli is also unbelievable help in organizing the training schedule, the packing up on the trips and generally very pleasant to be around. The other ladies have only been here four months, but they are equally as nice and I'm growing to love these ‘lil gals too.”

South African Team Selected for the WEG
Dominique van Zyl - Bambinella, Lani van Gerve - Arkab Legato, and Eone' Willemse - Shamwari, have qualified and been selected to represent South Africa in Endurance at the WEG2010.
Though Dominique qualified on the South African horse Prins in 2009 at Schanskraal, she chose to qualify on a Brazilian mare, Bambinella, due to the strict quarantine restritions on South African horses. Both horse and rider achieved their WEG qualification in March of 2010 in Brazil.
Lani van Gerve has ridden internationally in Namibia, Botswana, the USA, and as a Young Rider in Bahrain in 2005. Arkab Legato, with 4500 competitive kilometres to his name, has completed 3 Fauresmith South African Championship rides, and 8 160-km rides, including a first place and Best Condition award at the Tri-Nations and South African National
Championships, Beaufort West in 2009.
Eone' Willemse has completed 10 160-km rides on 9 different horses. She has competed internationally in Namibia, Botswana, New Zealand, and the USA.
Shamwari, owned by Megan Davis, has completed 5 160-km rides and is ranked number 3 on the National Best Condition List.

"WEG SELECTION CRITERIA", Explained
Hi Everyone!
Since I have been receiving so many inquiries from around the world, I created the attached document as an explanation, and forward it for your use.
As a note, in the published requirements for speed at WEG, the 13 kph was inserted since that is the minimum speed for this WEG only. At each 4* CEIO, the minimum speed for that particular event is determined by the OC in consultation with the TD and FEI. This minimum speed is arrived at by looking at the type of terrain, climactic conditions and previous winning and/or completion times if these statistics are available. There is no longer a set minimum speed requirement mentioned in the rules as in the past.
Regards,
Ruth

Dr. Kathy Kivi, who is our Assistant Team Vet., will be 8-1/2 months pregnant at the time of competition and she (and the rest of us!!) were a little nervous that she would be so close to term and concerned for her wellbeing, so Kathy has stepped down for this event giving Brianne the opportunity to assist Dr. Stan Alkemade, our Canada East Team Veterinarian. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT RE: NOMINATIONS TO THE KENTUCKY CUP 2009!
MEMO TO: Endurance Canada Affiliate Membership FROM: Endurance Canada International RE: Nomination to The Kentucky Cup 2009 DATE: June 24th, 2009 THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE IN THE DEADLINE DATES FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE KENTUCKY CUP – please see the revised attached Selection Criteria document. At the request of the Ontario representatives of ECI, and on behalf of the Ontario Provincial Championship’s OC, and with the approval of Equine Canada, we have extended the deadlines for nominations/qualifications for The Kentucky Cup, from July 10th, 2009 to August 6th, 2009. When the Ontario Championships were planned last year, it was anticipated that this competition would attract/benefit those ‘newer’ FEI riders wanting to qualify for International competitions. If the July 10th dates had remained in place this would have very likely influenced their entries and jeopardized the Ride’s viability. It is our goal to encourage as many riders as possible to participate in such events, to broaden our base of FEI riders and horses, and we want to do all we can to assist ride managers who are willing to take on the challenge of hosting these FEI competitions, on our behalf. We apologize that this had not been realized/determined earlier; the ‘problem’ resulted from a misunderstanding. Always in the past, we have had an earlier ‘nomination/ranking/naming- the-squad’ date, with a later ‘qualification’ date. Based on legal advice from Equine Canada, and in preparation of our template for selection criteria for future international events, we were advised that the qualification period must end before any ranking/naming-the-squad could take place. We were being inundated with inquiries from riders wanting to know their ranking so that if they were in the top 6, they could begin to prepare for the October event, prompting us to move our original June nomination date to July. However, in fairness to the Ontario OC and riders, we have now further extended the nomination date to August 6th. We are confident that you will agree with the logic and sentiment of this decision.IMPORTANT - ALL riders who are planning to nominate are requested to send all their ‘earlier-than-July 30th’ ride data to Trisha in the prescribed format – online – well in advance of August 6th. There will be no time for correction of incomplete, improper data. Equine Canada will NOT accept any late nominations – everything MUST be in order and received by August 6th, 2009 as outlined.

THOUGHTS FROM YVETTE VINTON, DVM –
TEAM CANADA WEC 2008
Just some thoughts for interested grooms, helpers, (and new riders?): - go to all the FEI rides you can, - hang around (whether riding or not) - help riders and learn, - offer to scribe? for vets... listen and learn, get the feel, see what they are looking for, and at. - or even hang around with other FEI officials, and learn...
I know FEI rides are quite a bit apart (geographically), but if any of you want to go on vacation or travel a little, some of the rides are in beautiful places. And if you can spend the day before with any riders or officials you will learn set up and preparation and rules. And if you stay for the day of the ride, you will learn even more. Take notes, pictures, videos, it will help you become so much more prepared and knowledgeable.

WEG 2010 FEI Qualification Criteria.TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS RELATING TO THE NEW COC OF 12:20 FOR WEG 2010:
With the maximum time limit now at the discretion of the OC hosting a Championship ride, they will be setting it according to the terrain and climatic conditions for that particular event. The OC together with the Technical Delegate determine what they consider to be a fair maximum time limit for that specific Championship event. They then send the proposal to the FEI office, who consults with the Endurance Technical Committee. The ETC comes back with comments, indicating either support or concern for the proposal; a vote is taken and the FEI office takes the final decision. The only thing we can do is attempt to host CEI 3* qualifiers that will enable us to achieve the required CoC. The idea behind the CoC is not that every horse in the world can in fact achieve it, and only those that are able to achieve it should be at a Continental or World Championship event. Sending only our very best athletes is what will allow us to stand out and achieve really great things in the sport. Having said that, we would not attempt a CoC of 12hr20min on a track like the Old Dominion or the Tevis, but these times can be achieved on other courses across Canada and the United States. We need really fit, capable, sound horses and really wise, experienced, aggressive riders if we are to achieve medal standings.
