Canadian longride for the Mustang I will be finishing my cross Canada horse back ride the old cowboy way leaving from Guelph Ontario mid March and doing my darndest to make it to the Calgary stampede in July. Then meeting up with Ken McLeod who has spent a lifetime fighting to have the Canadian Mustangs protected ,and has been successful in Saskatchewan .Ken has now turned his attention to Alberta . Once I have met up with Ken we are going to go and try and see some of these Canadian treasures. I will then head to B.C. and after B.C. header for home at a gallop. Kinball Foord

Did you all catch the great article about our own Nancy Beacon---very first inductee into the Endurance Canada Hall of Fame--in the February AERC Endurance News? Written by Bob Gielen. Kudos all around!

FEI Rides in Alberta!
1* & 2* on Sat. May 19th and a 1* & 3* on Sun. May 20th, Horseshoe Lake!
FEI Rides in Ontario!
1* & 2* on September 2nd, North Stormont!
Hi, all
For those who are interested in pursuing FEI, the biggest problem is the scarcity of rides to attend. Here is how things look.
(Remember, before attending an FEI 50, you have to have done 3 'domestic' 50s no faster than 5 hours. Horses have the same requirements as riders)
There is a 1* (50 ) in Alberta May 19 and another one in the same place May 20 (in other words, 2 days--possible to qualify two horses) There is a 1* (50) in Oregon July 13 and another one in the same place July 14
There is a 2* (75) in Alberta May 19
There is a 2* at Fort Howes in Montana on July 9. I believe there may be another one July 10. There must be a 1* as well, but it doesn't seem to be listed,
There is a 2* in Oregon on July 13 and another one July 14. This ride also has a two-day 160 (ie, two-day 100 miles), which can be used as 2* qualification.
There is a 3* (100 mile) in Alberta on May 20
There is a 3*in Oregon on July 14
All three distances are offered in April in California.
There will almost certainly be 'open' rides held in conjunction with these, if you have travelling partners who aren't interested in FEI.
The Alberta ride will probably not be AERC sanctioned, but you can get your mileage.

2012 Date and Location Approved for Adequan/FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North
By Joanie Morris, NAJYRC
*Lexington, KY*- The dates and location of the 2012 Adequan/FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North have been designated.
The competition will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park from July 18-22, 2012 - the week before the Olympic Games commence in London.
Adequan has returned as the title sponsor of this competition, and makes the dreams of young equestrians (ages 14-21) a reality. It is through the support of Adequan that this event has been able to grow - it now boasts nine FEI Championships.
Dressage, Eventing, Jumping and Reining each offer a championship for Juniors and one for Young Riders. Endurance - which was added in 2011 as a championship, offers an FEI championship for Young Riders.
The final, overall points are posted!
(unless there are any boo boos!)
A word about Mileage: it is very much a 'work in progress'. We need a good database; hopefully in 2012. The historical mileage I have imported is AERC records--I have no access to records from other countries, or FEI, or Alberta (although I think that is 'in the works')
Also, AERC's online records are not entirely accurate; for those who ride FEI they may not reflect your 'foreign miles'. For example when I
log on as a member and check my mileage that way, I have 175 more miles than shows up on the online record. I cannot access other people's records. SO--once we have a proper database, people will have to 'apply' for mileage that isn't apparent through AERC.

AGAINST ALL ODDS….
The FEI has an annual FEI Awards program where awards are presented in several categories, based on nominations from the world at large. At the General Assembly in Rio, the "Against All Odds" award was won by none other than our Meg Wade! She is truly an amazing woman! As you will remember, Meg was one of the top Australian riders and suffered a serious head injury (in spite of wearing a helmet); was in coma for awhile, had to rehab back from almost the very beginning. She has been on a horse now...walking in a ring. At one time she wasn't expected to live, let alone ever to walk or ride again. (Terre O’Brennan and Ruth Carlson)

Winding Down...
Farewell from Maura: "All packed, checking out and saying goodbyes, 45 minutes to when they pick us up and take us to the airport. Has been a great trip, didn't go as to plan, but sometime that happens."
Jan and Martin Marsh wrote: “WOW we are in awe of you all! What a great Team!! Safe journey home to you all no doubt with dreams of ‘where next”! Memories that will stay with you for ever – Summer too I am sure was a little sad she couldn’t have been ridden further. Remember though these wonderful creatures give us their all so when they are sore it’s our turn to look after them! They too will come back stronger! Take care everyone!”
Kudos and Farewells!
Ariel wrote:”Leaving soon to go home, I'm going to miss this place!”
Kim: "Kudos to Team Canada. Some days, the race ends early; but you did an awesome job to get there and *be* there. Safe home! Thanks for sharing with us, Glenn - you should be proud. What a great team to be part of."
Farewell from Glenn: "Hey everyone: The ladies all go home tonight and me to England tomorrow for a few days before going back to Manitoba. Thanks so much to Maura for all her hard work and organization skills in spite of a slow Organizing Committee and that she has been sick the whole time here. Her photos have really made this experience one for all of us to share and she stayed up late each night making sure that this page was current so a big round of applause to Maura!

News from Tara: “What a day. So much to write about. But first, planking in Abu Dhabi!”

From Ariel: “Finally got to ride a Camel today!! Summy is looking more fabulous by the day, and vetting tomorrow. The excitement never ends :)”
Dec. 7th pm (here in BC!):
From Ariel: “Yesterday before opening ceremonies a few of us got to go to the beach, what a beautiful sight/feeling. The sand was super white, and the water as clear and blue as ever. This morning Team Canada will get down and dirty clipping Summer; I'm sure we will see black hair everywhere!!”
SO many ‘Good Wishes’ are being sent to the Team! Such as……
From Misha Green: “I have goosebumps! Go Ariel and Team Canada!”
From Julie Green: “Will be thinking of you all and sending lots of good vibes your way!!”
From Lynda Townsend (Chair, Endurance Canada International): “Thank you, Glenn and Maura, for posting such wonderful details; it’s as if we were looking through a window and can see it all from a distance. More on Dec. 7th…..
From Maura: “Camels will be racing at the camel track about 8km away; we, of course, won’t get to go :) Plan is to clip on Thursday morning, giving the relief as close to race day. Normal highs are 27, is 20 at 11pm. At the opening ceremonies those who had the jacket and the fleece were warm; those who only had the jacket were cold. They are thinking there may be 80 rather than 60 entries.”
From Glenn: “So we have been busy doing "detail work" in the last couple of days involving lots of ineffectual running around and getting some great pics thanks to Maura, often from a moving vehicle. We "broke the hump" today (sorry lots of hump jokes lately) when Maura purchased the local GPS software so our movements are more efficient yet no less frightening due to the local drivers. With the decreased stress of navigation and the Opening Ceremonies tonight we all finally admitted that we are tired....pumped but tired. The timing is perfect to have a reasonable rest before getting into the real excitement..wouldn't you agree?
Dec. 7th – noon (BC):
From Wendy MacCoubrey: “Wow - the race is only a few days away - it's getting so exciting! Go North America!!!”
December 7th – am…..
OPENING CEREMONIES TONIGHT! WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE MORE ‘DRIVING/PARTYING’ STORIES!
MORE PHOTOS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE (www.endurancecanada.ca – under Latest News), or on Facebook/endurancecanada!
From Wendy Gayfer (Equine Canada Program Director for the Non-Olympic FEI Disciplines): “Great photos. Do you think the camels have an advantage in the race on Saturday!
From Maura (one of the ‘back-seat drivers!): “Well, initially when I saw the price of the AEU map for my GPS at $123, decided not to buy it. Well, trying to find things is way too difficult (we always get there as there are multiple routes to get there!). And we are getting to see a lot of Abu Dhabi because of it! Yesterday we spent way too much (I'm not saying how much!) time to find a mall..... purchase the map last night - well worth it - will make getting to the opening ceremony and closing ceremony much easier. :) way too many good driving stories :)”
Dec. 6th pm..
From Ariel: “Well, now is the start of a new day - wonder what adventures Abu Dhabi brings us today. Finally got some sleep! That might help to be more functional. Going to see Summy soon and take her for a little ride :)

“Well, another day in Abu Dhabi. Lots of roundabouts and lots of wishing for roundabouts.
Summer has been telling us since arrival she is ready to do this race. Today she told us a little differently. She is tired of being cooped up and loved her ride. Hopefully we can convince her that patience is a virtue. Still looking fabulous, but 'chomping at the bit'.
Tomorrow we are hoping for some beach time!
Camel riding planned for dessert supper on Thursday night - so excited!”

60 riders to compete in UAE horse race
By M. Satya Narayan, Chief Sports Reporter
Published: 14:51 December 5, 2011
Abu Dhabi: Over 60 riders from 29 countries will be competing in the 120-km FEI Junior and Young Rider World Endurance Championship to be held at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba this Saturday.
Dec. 6th 8:30 am (in BC!):
There have been so many well-wishers, like this latest one from Darlene Anderson (PNER): “Good luck, Ariel & Summer! Do the NW and Canada proud!”
And then a ‘conversation’ between Glenn and Kim Woolley (Team Canada Coach):
Glenn: “Another great day! Ariel and Summer went for a ride this morning by themselves and away from the rest of the barn and they had a beautiful ride. I needed some cardiovascular exercise so I went along for the first third walking and jogging to the top of a hill where I could watch them go off and back for about 10 minutes trotting and mixing it up and then back to where I was waiting then we returned together to the quarantine barn. She was obviously very happy to get out and get some real exercise and even though she was sweated up her pulse was down to 36 in no time. I do believe that she is also just coming out of season and I think that is making a difference as well which is perfect timing. She has never been on Regumate so this is no time to try something new. Her afternoon walk was again with the 3 of us and she was a little on the muscle but nothing like the last few days so once again I am pleased with how well all is going with her. The OC has provided us all with beautiful T-shirts and jackets and each group 2 cars so we can get a lot more done and share responsibilities and have more time for leisure.”
Kim: “Thanks for the updates, Glenn -- so happy to hear that all is going well. That sounds like quite the harem you have to worry about :) Please pass on best wishes to Ariel!!”
Glenn: “Yes, since I arrived ahead of the rest of my harem I joked with the very helpful concierge that I would soon be joined by my 5 wives...After they all got here he approached me quietly in the lobby after we had all been to lunch together and then dispersed to our rooms and he said me "Which is favorite wife?"
Kim: “Too funny - did you reply that it was the 4-legged one? :)”
Dec. 5th – now 11:00 am BC time (Not getting much else done
this day! DR)
MORE ON CODY CANUCK… from a profile on Kelsey Kimbler
by Merri Melde (endurance.net):
Endurance rider Kelsey Kimbler, 18, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, is one of those Young Riders. Currently a full-time student at Northern State University studying biology, she'd never heard of such an event until she was at the AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference) annual convention in March of this year. There she met Belgian endurance rider and author ("Endurance, a French Perspective"), Leonard Liesens, who talked about the Championship in Abu Dhabi on December 10, and encouraged her to work on qualifying for it. Implausible as it sounded, that's exactly where Kelsey is headed right now with her mom Kelly, and her older sister Kirsten's gelding, Cody Canuck.
When Kirsten left for dental school this year, Kelsey took over riding Cody Canuck competitively. They completed their first ride together at this year's Fort Howes 75-mile ride in June, finishing 5th. A seasoned endurance horse with 1655 AERC miles, Cody, 14, is the Kimbler family's best horse. "He has a great work ethic... but he doesn't really care for people. He has his moments where he gets a little crazy at times, but he's really OK."
Dec. 5th – 10:30am BC Time
From Dessia: “Not sure if too many people realize this, but one of the US horses, Cody Canuck, is Canadian bred! So we have two Canadian horses competing at the YR World Champs!” (The breeder was Hans Anderson and the previous owner was Myna Cryderman, who sold him to Kimblers a few years ago.)
Still Dec. 5th – 8:45 am BC Time:
More from Glenn: “Well, things are falling into place...I can stand the sight and smell of myself again although I may have been a little over critical because everyone still says that they smell Camel dung everywhere. The GPS is not functioning but not to worry because now I am blessed with 3 backseat drivers all with their own skill set..Maura "Why are you driving through here?: Me" Because it’s the roundabout at the hotel and that’s how you get into the parking lot" Tara (elevated to front seat status after losing Maura and Joan)" You can back out of this parking spot because there are no cars coming: Me "Thanks Tara but there is a pedestrian standing behind the car" Joan has only been slightly helpful but she hasn't made it to the front seat yet . Thankfully from Ariel it is "Glenn you are soooo patient" "Glenn you have such good taste in music".”
Dec. 5th 8:00am BC time:
From Maura: Hotel check in - sure glad we arrived yesterday!

From Tara: “Summer is doing amazing. She looks great. Ready to show the world what Canadian bred horses are made of! Oh Mr. camel! Soon we will ride across the desert together!”
From Glenn: “The mare had 3 drag sessions today with her mother Tara and then this afternoon we took her out on her own and she tagged team Tara then Ariel then me then Tara again. Upon arrival back to the quarantine she looked completely normal but the 3 of us could use some serious cleaning up between the sand everywhere and the blistered hands ...she is ready!
I would love to tell you more but someone just came pounding on my hotel room door (its 7:30 pm) and we are going downstairs for something cold by the pool then another fantastic dinner in the Hotel Mafrac restaurant......if they have enough to drink I may have another entry later and yes we are having FUN!

THE JOYS (PAPERWORK!) OF IT ALL!
(from Ariel) (Dec. 4th 5:00 pm EDT) · We are finally in Abu Dhabi. And although it's 2:30 in the morning here Joan, Mom and I are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to go see ‘Miss Summy’ in a few hours!
Maura Leahy posted on Endurance Canada's Wall - |
"I arrived at 8pm this evening (well last evening) and was picked up along with the others that were expected at the same time - thanks Glenn for paving the way. Met up with Kelly, Kelsey, Kyle and Melodie in the Amsterdam airport, was great to see some familiar faces. ( I'm also glad to report that Glenn's luggage arrived tonight. (And both the GPS and Maura also arrived to night!!!). A big thanks to Glenn for arriving yesterday to be here when Summer arrived.") |
Dec. 4th – am
SUMMER AND GLENN HAVE ARRIVED! (By the time this is posted the rest of the Team should be there too!)
“Well I got here last night and Summer this morning and hopefully the rest of the team and my luggage will also get here this evening. Nothing like 2 days of travelling followed by a day in the desert without a change of clothes..lets change the subject.
The mare is amazing! We did blood work upon arrival and she looks ready to race and the rest of her physical exam is remarkable. I was going to give her "rehydration therapy" supplied by the treatment vet and he said to me that he would not give her fluids as she is obviously adapting and that we might in fact interfere with the process.
That and combined with the fact that our 4 tent mates from the US were about to go for a hand walk leaving her alone changed my plans as we are only allowed in the quarantine area from 8-noon and 2-6 so there was yet another reason to hold off
Ariel and Summer –
The Adventure has Begun!
Sat. Dec. 3rd….6:30 EDT
Ariel and Tara are now in the air! Glenn (Team Canada Veterinarian) will be in Abu Dhabi to meet Summer early Sunday morning!
From Chef Maura: Now in Minneapolis. Update from Scott, Summers groom, that the flight is on time, just took off from Brussels, will be arriving on time in the UAE!
From Scott: She is travelling fine. No problems.

Quebec park bidding against six others to host 2018 World Equestrian Games
November 16, 2011 - The Globe and Mail
Roger Deslauriers, the squire of the Bromont Equestrian Park in Quebec, was ruffled by only one thing on Wednesday: the surprising number of competitors he faces in a bid for the 2018 World Equestrian Games.
“I didn’t know there were so many,” said Deslauriers, the general manager of the facility that staged the equestrian events at the 1976 Olympics – 35 years ago.
FEI ANNUAL AWARDS
(Check out ‘Against All Odds below)
Horse Sport Canada| November 15, 2011
Five women were rewarded for their outstanding contribution to equestrianism at the FEI Awards ceremony on Monday, November 14th in the superb setting of Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Palace Hotel.
The FEI is proud to announce that the winners of the FEI Awards 2011 are:
Development Award – Soraya Ourrais (FRA/MAR)
Soraya won this awards for her enormous contribution to the revival of equestrian sport in Cambodia, where it disappeared in the 1970s in the tragedy of the Khmer Rouge regime.
A Level 1 FEI coach, Soraya trained more than 350 beginners, as well as grooms and Cambodia’s first instructor and judge. In the absence of any equine veterinarians, she travelled to neighbouring countries for advice and technical solutions to recurrent problems and established a network for the provision of medicine and vaccines. She also organised
school trips, youth camps and courses to promote equestrianism and was the brain behind Horse Future, a programme that benefits underprivileged children and has provided Cambodia with its national equestrian team.

Endurance Participation in Equine Canada’s
Horse Maintenance Program (HMP)
Equine Canada’s Horse Maintenance Program (HMP) is to encourage owners of international caliber horses to make them available to the Canadian Equestrian Team. Only owners (or person incurring the expenditures) of passported, registered (FEI) horses are eligible to apply for participation in the HMP.

Riding for a cause in Australia
12 Oct, 2011 10:47 AM
LAST Thursday afternoon, people on the streets of Merredin may have noticed a group of people riding their horses along Barrack Street.
The horse riders were on day six of their endurance horse ride from Mundaring to Kalgoorlie to raise funds for cancer research, education and support services for the WA Cancer Council.
Holly Bongers, Larissa Cooney, Bessie Traylen and Maddison King are all young members of the Wooroloo Horse and Pony Club who jumped at the chance ride along the pipeline for a good cause.
The girls aged 14 and 15 aim to raise $25,000 during their 14-day trek to Kalgoorlie called ‘Kalgoorlie or Bust’.
On day six, they left Kellerberrin for Merredin and they were half way there having already raised $12,500.
However, this was no easy task; the girls have had 12 months of physical endurance and mental training in preparation for the event and were starting to feel the strain and exhaustion during their stopover in Merredin.
Every day the girls wake up at 4.45am to feed their horses, go back to sleep, then wake up again to have their breakfast at 6am before they hit the road at 6.30am.
The girls are usually on the road for about five hours before they stop to rest for the day.
About 20 people, including friends and family of the girls, have come along for the pipeline ride by driving in support vehicles.
Holly Bongers said she decided to participate in the fundraising event because her grandfather suffered from cancer and all the other girls had been close to cancer at some stage in their 14 years.
It was then decided to make something that they love to do and turn it into a fundraiser for the WA Cancer Council.
Kylie Martin, a good friend and mentor to the girls has also come on board.
She is an endurance rider who is a huge influence on the girls and is extremely supportive of each and every one of them.
She is teaching them about caring for an endurance horse, not a pony club horse and how to rise to the challenge of so many days in the saddle.
All the girls are passionate about the whole exercise.
They are part of the committee and are putting in huge amounts of time talking to people and brain storming ideas together.
The ride has been endorsed by the Pony Club Association of WA and the WA Cancer Council.

Equine Canada Export Market Development Leads Canadian Equestrian Ambassadors to Chinese Endurance Race
Ottawa, ON — Through the Path to China initiative led by Equine Canada’s Export Market Development program (EC Export), Canadian endurance riders have been invited to participate in an 80 km endurance race taking place in Zhaosu Xinjiang, China, this June.
“Canada’s participation in the Zhaosu endurance race is one of many opportunities that came as a result of the EC Export path finding mission to China that we conducted this past March,” stated Susan Stewart, a consultant to EC Export.
Four individuals have been selected not only on their competitive abilities, but on the personal attributes that make them best suited to be ambassadors of Canada’s equine industry as a whole. The riders include 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) Canadian Equestrian Team (CET) members, Elroy Karius, Gail Jewel and Robert Gielen, and 2008 FEI World Endurance Championships CET member, Wendy MacCoubrey. They will be the first riders to compete in mainland China as dedicated Canadian representatives following the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the equestrian sports were held in Hong Kong.

Anti Doping Requirements and Resources for National and International Level Equestrian Athletes (April 13th, 2011)
Hello all,
Below you will find an email which provides details for your athletes regarding Anti Doping regulations, requirements, and resources for 2011.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this email to all of your PAG declared riders, national team riders, and any other rider lists you may have for your specific discipline.
If you or your athletes have any questions regarding this information please don’t hesitate to ask!
I would like to make specific reference to the Global DRO (www.globaldro.com) as this is an amazing resource for verifying whether or not any medications are prohibited. It is important that your athletes check their cold and their pain medications as these sometimes end up on the prohibited lists!
Thanks so much. Sandra
