A report from our Youth Chair, Kate Coady, currently at school at Olds College in Alberta:
“This week we had the grand opening of the Canadian Equine Center for Innovation here at Olds College. I got to be a part of the ceremony as an equine student which was really neat!
They're still building new additions, but right now the barn looks absolutely amazing. And the riding arena is easily the best one I've ridden in!”

Author: By Joanie Morris
Lexington, KY Pending final FEI approval, the USEF is announcing the following date and location for the 2010 Adequan FEI North American Junior/Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC). The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has received preliminary approval and is awaiting final allocation from the FEI Bureau.
Pending this approval, the NAJYRC will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park July 28-August 1, 2010. This is a unique opportunity to use a venue which has been completely redesigned. Less than two months later, the world will begin to arrive in Lexington, KY, for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

In 2009, the Kentucky Horse Park welcomed a record number of juniors and young riders for these championships in the three Olympic disciplines of dressage, eventing and jumping and the Western discipline of reining.
Vaulting will again hold an exhibition during the championships and endurance will run a CEIY** concurrently in Louisville, KY.

Young Endurance Rider from BC participates in Dressage Championships in Nova Scotia
The Canadian Pony Club held their National Dressage Championships at Truro, Nova Scotia this past August. Five girls from the British Columbia Interior North were chosen to represent their region. This region encompasses the area from Osoyoos north to Terrace. Danica Sandercock and
Teri Lynn Moorby were chosen from the Kelowna and District Pony Club - both girls live in Joe Rich.
The out of town people were housed at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro.
They rode borrowed horses from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton.
On Friday they test rode their “new “ borrowed ponies/horses. On Saturday they rode their dressage tests according to their levels: Teri Lynn rode ‘starter’, and Danica rode 1st level. These tests had to be memorized by
the rider.Teri Lynn placed 4th in two dressage tests, 3rd in the written test on dressage theory and 6th overall in her division.
Saturday evening saw all the riders write a dressage theory test. On Sunday, they rode a mystery dressage test from another country. This test was called by a volunteer
from the area. On Sunday, after the events and awards ceremony we travelled by bus into Halifax to enjoy two days being a tourist, before returning to British Columbia.
Congratulations, Teri Lynn! What a great experience!

Youth & ENDURANCE CANADA!
It is with excitement and enthusiasm that we invite all ‘younger’ riders in Canada to participate in our National Youth Sub-committee. Kate Coady (a Young Rider formerly from Nova Scotia, now residing in B.C.) is spear-heading this initiative, which will provide a much-needed forum and support system for the Youth in our sport. The Sub-committee will be comprised of Juniors and Young Riders from across the country; if YOU are interested, or you know a young endurance rider who might be, please contact your provincial representative (see Committees/Board Of Directors or e-mail Kate directly).
Kate has set up a group account on Facebook to facilitate communication among our young riders: FaceBook Link
Kate welcomes your e-mails: E-Mail Link
Thank you, Kate!

YOUTH SUB-COMMITTEE
We are still looking for representatives from each province to help reach as many youth as we can across the country. Our current reps are:
British Columbia – Ariel MacLeod and Kate Coady (Chair- Youth Sub-committee)
Ontario – Jessica Hendriks and Lee Hutten
Quebec – Devan Dowbiggin
Here is a little introduction from some of the Reps:
Hello,
My name is Jessica Hendriks; I live just north of Barrie, Ontario. I have been riding for 9 years but have been competing in endurance riding for 7 years. My hopes for this committee are to better prepare young riders for endurance rides, especially FEI level rides. When I competed in my first FEI competition it was stressful and not very enjoyable, so the hopes for this committee is to make FEI competitions less stressful and more enjoyable for the young riders. The committee is also trying to put together more resources for the young riders to use as most of the other resources and articles all seem to be adult-based. We are also trying to bring forward the idea of more senior riders to allow young riders to have the opportunity to pit crew for them. This would be the perfect way for young riders to learn more and hopefully allow them to become better endurance riders themselves.

My name is Lee Hutten. I am 17 years old. I live in Chesterville, Ontario (south of Ottawa). I have been riding for almost 10 years now, and have been riding CTR and Endurance for about 4 years now. I am planning on going to Indiana in July with my horse I Bee Jazzin' and going through the FEI Star System to qualify for WEG. With the Youth sub-committee, I hope that all youth riders support each other and share experiences. We can help each understand more about the sport and learn from one another. I also hope that the formation of this committee will help get more juniors and young riders interested.

My whole life I’ve dreamed of becoming a horse back rider as most children do. But until the age of around eight I never had the chance. When I finally started at EquesTran Stables, it didn’t take long to fall in love with the sport. I learned the basic care of horses and how to compete in hunter jumper. After Christmas of 2008, I started to ride with a friend of the family, Lynda Townsend who was the first to introduce me to endurance riding (Lynda represents Quebec on the Board of Endurance Canada). Since then I’ve had a whole new perspective on how to handle horses and have been learning the rules of Endurance.

JUNIOR/YOUNG RIDER COMPETITORS:
Young Riders can compete in YR Events from the beginning of the year in which they will turn 16 until the end of the year in which they will turn 21.
Juniors can compete in Junior Events from the beginning of the year in which they will turn 14 until the end of the year in which they will turn 18.
There is an overlap there, and riders in this age group can choose which category they to compete in. However, for Championship Events, they can only compete in one or the other in any given year.
Seniors can compete in Senior events, including Championship Events in the year when they will turn 18.
In Endurance, any person from the beginning of the year in which they turn 14 can compete in Senior Events as long as they have met all the qualification requirements and are authorized by their National Federation.
